IJCLab organises an exceptional event to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the discovery of artificial radioactivity, a major breakthrough achieved in 1934 by Frédéric and Irène Joliot-Curie.
This commemorative day, initially scheduled for October 2024 but postponed due to the flooding of the Yvette river, will take place on Monday, April 7, 2025 from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM at the P. Lehmann auditorium in building 200.
A rich program and distinguished guests
The morning will be dedicated to the history and context of this revolutionary discovery, with lectures accessible to all. IJCLab will have the honor of welcoming Hélène Langevin-Joliot and Pierre Joliot, children of Frédéric and Irène Joliot-Curie, who will share their memories and scientific knowledge.
The afternoon will highlight the still vibrant scientific heritage of artificial radioactivity through the presentation of contemporary work that demonstrates its continuing influence in current fundamental research and technologies.
A discovery with multiple repercussions
The creation of the first artificial radioisotopes by the Joliot-Curies opened revolutionary perspectives in many scientific fields, with major applications in medicine. Nearly a century later, this discovery continues to influence our technical means and our understanding of matter.
An open invitation to all personnel
This event is open to all IJCLab and University of Paris Saclay staff interested in the history of science and its contemporary applications. It is a unique opportunity to celebrate a major milestone in our French and global scientific heritage.
