ALTO has gained a new connection wtih 10 Gb/s !

Some of the large-scale experiments at ALTO require the acquisition of large volumes of data. In preparation for the Nu-Ball experiment, it was necessary to resolve the problem of transferring large amounts of data via the internet, from one of the ALTO experiment rooms to VirtualData. Technical difficulties delayed the process of installation in several stages, through an intermediate building equipped with a a computer room, taking all the necessary precautions due to
a high-voltage cable identified between the buildings on campus. With multimode fibers already available (2x1Gb / s), ALTO finally benefited from the installation of a single-mode fiber, thanks to the joint efforts of the IT department and the risk prevention services (SPR) with the assistance of the University Paris-Saclay.

We recall that a multimode optical fiber OM1 only allows a speed of 1Gb/s over 500 m while a single mode optical fiber allows a speed of 10 Gb/s over 10 km, which is equivalent to 100 Gb/s per km. The actual bandwith depends on the transceiver to which the fiber is connected.
